Amazon’s Alexa Will No Longer Support Celebrity Voices Like Melissa McCarthy & Samuel L. Jackson

Amazon is all set to discontinue celebrity voices for its popular virtual assistant Alexa. While the company has not really revealed the reason behind the decision, one of the possible reasons could be the lack of demand for Alexa with celebrity voices.

The service was launched by Amazon in 2019 and currently features the voice of three celebrities - Samuel L. Jackson, Shaquille O’Neal, and Melissa McCarthy. Jackson's voice was the first to be introduced by Amazon, giving the users the opportunity to listen to jokes, stories and different answers in the voice of the Hollywood star. Amazon also gave the users the option to choose between the explicit or clean version.

The company, however, has decided to discontinue the celebrity voices for its virtual assistant. It is no longer available for purchase. In case users have bought a celebrity voice before it was discontinued, they will still be able to use it until September 30, 2023.

“After three years, we’re winding down celebrity voices. Customers will be able to continue using these voices for a limited time and can contact our customer service team for a refund," an Amazon spokesperson was quoted as saying by TechCrunch.

A note on Jackson’s page states: "Samuel L. Jackson’s Alexa voice is no longer available for purchase. Customers who previously purchased the experience may continue to use the skill until April 2023 by saying 'Hey Samuel'.

The Amazon spokesperson, however, has said that the users will be able to hear Jackson’s voice through June 7th. On the other hand, McCarthy and Shaq’s voices could be heard until September 30th.

Apart from a lack of demand, another reason behind Amazon's decision could be the price. At launch, the users had to pay only $0.99 for the celebrity voice services before Amazon decided to raise it to $4.99 for just one celebrity voice. It won't be wrong to assume that not many users will be willing to spend that amount for one celebrity voice.

Another reason could be the company's cost-cutting review. Last yeaar, the Wall Street Journal had reported that Amazon was looking at its devices division including Alexa as part of the company’s cost-cutting review. The report claimed that  Amazon’s devices segment had an operating loss of over $5 billion a year in recent times.
